Make a Princess Crown Headband
A friend of mine is dressing her daughter as Princess Peach from Super Mario Brothers this year for Halloween. She managed to nail down most of the costume without any problem, but when it came to the crown she was stumped. If you’re not familiar with Princess Peach, she wears an iconic yellow crown with a row of triangular spikes. Knowing I was among her craftier friends, she asked if I had any ideas. And, of course, I did!
Project materials:
- Yellow craft foam, on hand or $1
- Headband, on hand or $1
- Hot glue, on hand
Total: Free and up
Start by looking at the shape of your headband. Some headbands flex more than others, changing the radius of the curve at the top. Hold the headband so that it is stretched to approximately the shape it will have when worn by pushing the bottom ends outward until they are about a head width apart. Place the top curve of the headband on the craft foam and, continuing to hold it in its stretched position, trace along the curve.
Draw a row of spikes along the top of the curve to finish the crown shape. I drew mine freehand; if you’re not comfortable drawing directly on the foam, draw a template on a piece of paper first.
Cut out the crown shape. Be careful to cut inside any pen marks so that they won’t show on the finished product.
Hot glue the crown shape to the headband, starting at the middle and working outward. Try not to use too much glue to avoid an unsightly, lumpy edge. Or you can press some sparkly yellow beads into the excess glue to add some bling!
Your crown is ready to wear!
