Simple & Romantic: Mixed Berry Tart for Two

Ingredients:

  • Use your favorite pie crust recipe or pick up one box of  pie crust (rolled style in the refrigerated section, not the style that comes preformed in a tin).

Per tart:

  • 1.5 cups of frozen blueberries, raspberries and black berries
  • 1-2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup
  • 1 egg for a wash, optional

Directions:

  1. Let the pie crust rest on the counter until at room temp, then roll out on a lightly floured surface.  Cut large circles that are the size of your tart pans plus about 2 inches all the way around.  This will give you enough dough to press into all of the grooves around the pans and fold over the berries.   Use a small to medium heart shaped cookie cutter to make 1 heart for the center of each tart.
  2. Whisk one egg and set aside.

  3. Carefully place the frozen berries into the tart shell and then drizzle with the pure maple syrup.  Mold the pie dough over the top sides/edges of berries and pinch closed, making sure the juices won’t come out while baking.  Carefully brush just the top of the dough with an egg wash, only where the pie crust is, not over the berries.  Place the medium sized heart cut out in the center of the tart and brush the egg wash over this.

  4. Bake at 375 degrees for about 25 to 30 minutes.  Cover with foil for the first 12 to 16 minutes.  Keep an eye on the tarts as you approach the 22 minute mark to ensure they do not overcook.   Let the tarts rest for 15 minutes before serving to make sure they start to set and aren’t too hot.
